Mission Statement

The School will develop students' mental powers and character by challenging, extending and motivating students at all levels in academic, sporting and cultural areas so that they have the knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of life.

Location and Facilities

Palmerston North Boys' High School is situated 5 minutes walk from down town. It has outstanding facilities which include a Boys high 4.JPGheated indoor swimming pool, a new 350 seat theatre in a custom built performing arts centre, six computer centres/laboratories, 12 science labs, 2 gymnasiums and extensive outdoor sports facilities.

Academic Programme

The School's main goal is to prepare all students for tertiary education. In addition to the standard NCEA curriculum and qualifications, the school offers the Cambridge IGCSE in some subjects and a range of Massey University first year papers, which are taught at school. In addition, an accelerated programme is offered to able students. A significant number of students enter the Level 4 Scholarship examinations.

Sport and Extra Curricular

PNBHS has a huge extra curricular programme. Every sport is catered for, at every level of ability from Boys high 3.JPGbeginner to National Champions. Every team is coached or managed by a staff member. Recently, the School have been National Champions at Cricket, Rugby, Soccer, Basketball, Badminton, Shooting, Cycling and Athletics, but there are over 100 other teams in the major sports codes. There is also a very strong tradition and record in Music, Drama, Outdoor Education, Debating, Art, Photography, Snow Skiing and community involvement.

Student Welfare

Student welfare is looked after by the Students Services group which includes a full time counsellor for school and personal problems, a careers and tertiary advisor and an RTLB person who deals with problem children. In addition there are Deans at each Form level and each student has a Form teacher to help him.

Accommodation

The school will organise homestay accommodation for students who require it. As the School is a signatory to the Ministry Code of Conduct, these homestays will be vetted, inspected and checked on a regular basis to ensure that the student is in a safe, friendly and productive environment.

English Language Support

We provide two paths. After an initial assessment, the student will either take an intensive 3 month Boys high 1.JPGEnglish Course at an affiliated language school in town called Education Training Centre, or he will receive ESOL tuition from our ESOL staff during the normal school day. The aim is for all students to have IELTS 6.0 by the time they leave school.

International Student Programme

The Dean of International Students co-ordinates this programme which includes pastoral care, an orientation programme, academic supervision and communicating with parents. The Homestay Co-ordinator helps students with accommodation, travel and insurance problems. In 2003 there will be only 15 international students which will ensure close personal attention to each student.
