Vision Statement

Freyberg High School has a reputation as a school which provides a high quality, balanced education placing importance on academic, cultural and sporting achievement and the personal development of individuals.

Location and Facilities

Located in Palmerston North, Freyberg High School is a state co-educational high school situated in 04G-Duckfeeding-closeup 2.jpgspacious grounds, surrounded by trees and playing fields and has outstanding modern facilities.

Academic Programme

Courses are offered from Year 9 to Year 13 levels. Subjects offered include Accounting, Art, Art History, Biology, Business Studies, Catering, Ceramics, Chemistry, Classical Studies, Computer Studies, Drama, Economics, Traditional and Communication English, ESOL, Food & Nutrition, French, Geography, Graphics, History, Integrated Studies, Japanese, Media Studies, Mathematics, Maori, Music, Photography, Physical Education, Physics, Psychology, Spanish, Text Information, Technology and Tourism. Some prior learning of English is required, as all instruction will be in English. Evidence of prior English language instruction is required on application.

Extra Curricular Programme

A wide range of sports and cultural activities is offered. Many students are involved in music groups, drama, choir, debating and sports teams. The school offers outdoor education and adventure programmes including skiing, canoeing, mountaineering and caving.

Student Welfare

The International Student Support Manager is available at all times, including evenings, weekends and holidays to assist with any personal problems if they arise.

Accommodation

Freyberg High School arranges homestay accommodation at a weekly rate of $175. All homestays 01C-Breakfast 2.jpghave been police vetted and are visited regularly to ensure their continuing suitability. Pastoral care is available at any time of day to assist with any homestay problems if they arise. Students are met on arrival at Palmerston North airport and taken and introduced to their homestay host family.

International Student English Language Support Programme

All new students undertake an Orientation Programme which familiarises them with everyday English and the facilities of Palmerston North and the school. The student is assessed and placed in subject classes. Students receive a high level of support both in class and with subject assistance in the ESOL classroom ensuring that students understand the English language content of each subject. Students sit IELTS and the New Zealand Speech Board examinations in their final year. Students may sit the Pitmans ESOL examination at lower levels.
