International Education Manawatu has a wide range of education providers who meet the New Zealand quality standards for international education. High SchoolsSecondary (or High) school education is offered from Year 9 (age 13) through to Year 13 (age 17). International students can enrol at secondary schools at any level including senior studies in their 12th and 13th Year (from 16-17 years) as preparation for tertiary study in New Zealand. However, students are encouraged to enrol at junior levels (Year 9-10) as this provides a better foundation for university study. Some New Zealand universities require students to have specific subjects and grades for programmes with restricted entry - like Engineering - and have additional English language proficiency. This depends upon the course of study to be undertaken. All New Zealand universities require an overall IELTS (International English Language Testing System) grade of 6.0 or better, or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) mark of 550 or better. For students enrolling in universities or polytechnics direct from overseas, a good academic background along with proof of English Language competency is required. English Language SchoolsEnglish language schools encourage students to speak English and build confidence in writing, reading, listening and speaking skills. Schools offer varying levels of study from beginners to advanced academic English. IELTS and university preparation courses are also popular. In the Manawatu students can choose from two IELTS examination centres. Class sizes are small and teachers provide individual attention. Language schools provide a friendly environment, and the opportunity for students to meet and talk with native English speakers. Tertiary ProvidersNew Zealand has eight government-funded universities offering internationally recognised degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. All universities offer a broad range of courses. Institutions also have areas in which they specialise, such as Aviation, Veterinary Science and Agriculture (Massey University, Palmerston North). New Zealand universities have received worldwide acclaim for their contribution to international research. New Zealand has also an increasing number of private training establishments, delivering a wide variety of quality programmes, from design schools to farming courses. All are registered with the New Zealand Government and are NZQA (New Zealand Qualifications Authority) approved. Students can be confident of high standards of instruction. Polytechnic institutes also play a crucial role in New Zealand's regional economic development. Polytechnics offer a wide range of industry-focused professional, vocational, scientific, technology and trades training. Specialist applied programmes can extend to advanced diploma, degree and post-graduate level. Regional polytechnics like Palmerston North's UCOL (Universal College of Learning) are characterised by their advanced hi-tech facilities, practical approach to learning, and excellent study and vocational support. Finally, New Zealand Colleges of Education (Massey College of Education) professional programmes designed for those who wish to take up a career in early-childhood, primary or secondary school teaching. They are closely aligned to the university sector and also engage in education research. |
